I am an independent researcher and public-interest technologist who has spent over four decades working at the intersection of digital technology and human behavior. I have written extensively on cybersecurity, data privacy, and emerging technology risks.

My first computer security book was published in 1991. My first talk at Virus Bulletin was in 1994. I spoke at DEFCON III in 1995, and in 1996 I became a CISSP. The security consulting and training company that I co-founded was acquired in 1999. After the data privacy technology and training company that I co-founded was acquired in 2005, I took a break from the IT world and worked on an independent documentary and about racial injustice in Florida. It was shortlisted for the 2009 NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Documentary.

After an interesting few years helping a digital marketing software startup get started, I was hired in 2011 as a security evangelist by ESET, one of the world's largest security software companies. Based at their US headquarters in San Diego, my role evolved into Senior Security Researcher. In 2019, I received the CompTIA Tech Champion Award for my work in cybersecurity education and policy.

I retired from ESET in 2019 and now live in Coventry, the English city in which I was born, together with my partner Chey, the author of Network Security for Dummies, and our cat Lola, who has not written anything, yet.
